On January 30, 2025, The Catholic University of America hosted a thought-provoking event centered on the life and legacy of Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai, in conjunction with the release of Today Hong Kong, Tomorrow the World, a book by journalist and author Mark Clifford. The event featured remarks by Dr. William Saunders, Director of the Center for Human Rights at Catholic University, and welcomed Clifford as the guest of honor. Also in attendance was the Center’s Distinguished Fellow, Chen Guangcheng, who was recognized during the event for his enduring commitment to human rights.
Mark Clifford, president of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation, shared insights from his book, which chronicles the extraordinary courage of Jimmy Lai—a Catholic businessman and founder of Apple Daily, a now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong. Clifford highlighted Lai’s bold resistance to the Chinese Communist Party and his continued imprisonment under the National Security Law, framing him as a global symbol of moral clarity and sacrifice in the fight for freedom.
Dr. Saunders reflected on the moral dimensions of Lai’s witness, connecting his story to broader themes of conscience, religious freedom, and the obligation of the international community to defend those unjustly persecuted. He emphasized that Lai’s Catholic faith has been not only a personal anchor, but also a driving force behind his public stand for democracy and truth in the face of totalitarian pressure.
The presence of Chen Guangcheng, himself a survivor of political persecution in China, added depth and gravity to the event. Together, the participants helped illuminate the personal cost of defending human rights under authoritarian regimes and called on attendees to remain vigilant and engaged. The event underscored Catholic University’s commitment to upholding human dignity through academic inquiry, moral courage, and solidarity with the oppressed.
