Catholic University Screens "The Hong Konger"

On February 1, 2024, The Catholic University of America’s Institute for Human Ecology and Busch School of Business hosted a screening of The Hong Konger, a gripping documentary produced by the Acton Institute. The film tells the story of Jimmy Lai, a prominent Hong Kong media tycoon who found himself at the center of escalating political turmoil as the city’s freedoms came under threat from the Chinese Communist Party. The event took place on campus, drawing students, faculty, and community members concerned about the fate of democracy in Hong Kong and beyond.

Following the screening, Wall Street Journal columnist Bill McGurn led a thought-provoking discussion on the broader geopolitical and human rights issues raised by the film. McGurn drew on his extensive experience covering China and Hong Kong to provide context on the challenges faced by pro-democracy activists, highlighting Lai’s courageous stand as emblematic of wider struggles against authoritarianism.

Dr. William Saunders, Director of Catholic University’s Center for Human Rights, delivered remarks connecting the film’s themes to the university’s ongoing commitment to promoting human dignity and religious liberty. He emphasized the importance of bearing witness to such stories in fostering awareness and advocacy, particularly in academic settings where future leaders are formed.

The screening and discussion offered attendees a powerful opportunity to engage with the complex realities of contemporary human rights struggles. It reaffirmed Catholic University’s role as a place where faith and reason intersect to inspire action in defense of freedom and justice worldwide. Learn more about the film here.
